Looking the other way
Britain has provided no financial assistance to the five main pro-democracy organisations in Myanmmar for the past three years. The Government has also failed to provide assistance for the Karen tribespeople, who have been under attack by the Burmese army.
The Government did, however, spend £120,000 of public money to fund scientific surveys of bats near the region where some of the worst repression is occurring.
Lord, get your priorities right!
How does bat-research take precedence over human rights abuse?

That's amazing. We had a big debate about whether or not it's wise to visit Burma. You've probably heard about the tourist boycott by some folks, given the government's human rights abuses. Part of me wants to go anyway to support local people. There was an article in last month's National Geographic Magazine about an American writer who recently kayaked down the Irawaddy River. She had to be "escorted" by a government official the entire trip. Apparently the government wants tourists to see Burma thru the government's eyes. Great blog - thanks.
